Fundamental sex difference in human brain architecture.

چکیده

In PNAS, a report by Ingalhalikar et al. (1) has the makings of a landmark paper. Here I would like to briefly suggest why. Biomedical research in general, and neuroscience in particular, has been built on a false assumption. I refer to the assumption that one may safely ignore potential sex influences, for essentially every domain outside sexual functions and sex-specific issues like prostate function, and still learn everything fundamental there is to learn. Widespread acceptance of this false assumption among neuroscientists is the reason they still overwhelmingly use only males in their animal experiments while implying that their results will apply equally to females and why potential sex influences are still routinely ignored or dismissed even when both sexes are studied, as in many human subject and knockout mouse studies.

On the mis-presentation and misinterpretation of gender-related data: the case of Ingalhalikar's human connectome study.

In a PNAS paper on the human connectome, Ingalhalikar et al. conclude that their “results reveal fundamental sex differences in the structural architecture of the human brain” and link these differences to behavioral sex differences (1). Others have previously referred to the difficulties in linking sex differences in brain structure to sex differences in behavior (2). We would like to focus he...

Sexual Dimorphism in Human Brain Weight and Volume of Gray and White Matter in Normal and Neurodegenerative Subjects - A Stereological and Macroscopic Study

Purpose: This study is designed to determine the sex differences in brain weight and volume of left hemisphere and its gray and white matters in right-handed normal subjects and the right-handed subjects which were suffered from Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 72 normal human brains (38 male, 34 female), 11 brains suffered from Alzheimer (4 ...

Definition of Architecture

This paper seeks to investigate a new definition for architecture by unifying the three Vitruvian principles of firmitas, utilities, and venustas via a phenomenological approach in the interpretation and analysis of their role in defining architecture. The paper is composed in two main sections. The first section investigates the nature of architecture based on the mentioned principles, where a...

Explain the concept of human empathy perception of the constructed space (Architecture and city)

The quality of human perception of the environment is a determining factor in achieving responsive architecture. After the theories of behavioral sciences and environment, the idea of empathy with space has presented a new perspective on human perception of the environment; It is derived from the function of the mirror neurons of the brain, and results in an emotional sharing between the obs...
